Case Overview:
Three men were indicted following a gang-related, drive-by shooting in Providence, RI that resulted in one death and another victim sustaining serious injuries. Police identified the suspect vehicle, a white Dodge Durango rental, through surveillance footage. Footage showed two men exiting the vehicle shortly after the shooting and walking toward a residence. A search uncovered two handguns matching the shell casings at the crime scene. Cell site data linked the men to the vicinity of the shooting.
The man who rented the Durango retained Rhode Island Criminal Defense Lawyer, John L. Calcagni III. After nearly five years of delays, the case went to trial. Over three weeks, the jury heard from 15 witnesses and reviewed over 400 exhibits. While two co-defendants were convicted, the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict for Attorney Calcagni’s client, resulting in a mistrial. He was released from custody and has since reunited with his family.
