Federal Larceny or Theft of Government Property
A woman was charged with committing Larceny of Theft of U.S. government property on a military installation. The woman a spouse of an active duty military service member was observed committing the theft from a local post exchange. Loss prevention agents working in the exchange observed the woman via closed circuit television of the store surveillance system open a sealed package of merchandise. The woman then placed the merchandise into her purse and proceeded to exit the store without paying for the item. She was stopped by a loss prevention agent taken into custody and turned over to police for arrest and prosecution. Because this event occurred on a local military base she was subsequently charged in U.S. District Court with committing the crime of larceny or shoplifting.
