Case Overview:
A local police officer became the focus of a criminal investigation by Warwick Police, after his adopted daughter accused him of child molestation sexual assault. The officer and his spouse raised a blended family that consisted of biological and adopted children. The couple adopted a daughter from Ukraine. She immigrated to the United States to live with her adopted family as a young child. The couple struggled to raise the child, due to unforeseen mental health and behavioral issues the child experienced while adjusting to life in America and with her new family, and which stemmed from her past while living in Ukraine. As a result, the girl underwent mental health counseling, a number of psychiatric admissions, and even DCYF involvement. The couple remained committed to raising their adopted daughter, notwithstanding these challenges, and maintained custody of the girl until she became a young adult. Once the girl became of legal age, she moved out and on with her life. Some years later, the girl accused the police officer of molesting her repeatedly during her childhood. The officer immediately retained Rhode Island Sex Assault Defense Lawyer, John L. Calcagni III, to defend him during the investigation.
Case Result: No Charges Filed.
Attorney Calcagni and his client elected for a strategy that called for the man’s cooperation. They assembled records related to the girl’s former psychiatric and behavioral issues and related treatment, which they furnished to investigators. The officer also voluntarily participated in a recorded police interview. As a result of these efforts, Attorney Calcagni persuaded the investigative agency to close out the investigation with no criminal charges being filed against his client.
